Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay started to discover her creative and artistic side in her early years because of her Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theatre in daylight. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay was taught by her that art can be a vehicle for activism. In the same way, her mother was conscious of her social status and influenced her to say something through art. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English and African American Studies. As a student DuVernay began to consider producing for broadcast journalism. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of one of the members of the jury as well as go through their garbage. She was disappointed by the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired right out of college as an assistant publicist in a small studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. In addition to PR, the company has also launched lifestyle networks as well as advertising campaigns such as the Urban Beauty Collective.
